Is your company’s I-9 form up to date?

On January 31, a new version of the I-9: Employment and Eligibility Verification form was published. The previous form officially expired way back in August, but employers were instructed to continue using it until a new one was released. Companies have been granted a grace “transition period” of a few months, in which either form will be accepted. As of May 1, 2020, however, employers must exclusively begin using the new form.  And chin up – for those of you who don’t like this new form, its expiration date is already set for October, 2022.

What changed?

As a matter of fact, nothing at all! On the paper version, that is. The electronic version of the form has a few minor changes – it lists two additional countries in the ‘Country of Issuance’ field, it updates the Privacy Notice from the Department of Homeland Security, and it clarifies the list of acceptable documents.
